Time to ReThink is the motto of the 9th Edition of the Estoril Conferences 2024

October 24th and 25th 2024, at Nova SBE’s Carcavelos Campus

9th EDITION OF THE ESTORIL CONFERENCES

TIME TO RETHINK

PEACE | POLICIES | PLANET | AI & TECHNOLOGY | LONGEVITY

Carcavelos, March 26, 2024 – ‘Time to ReThink’ is the motto of the 9th Edition of the Estoril Conferences, which returns to the Nova SBE’s Carcavelos Campus on October 24th and 25th, 2024, proposing dialogue towards collective action to overcome the most pressing global challenges. Peace, Policies, Planet, Artificial Intelligence & Technology, and Longevity are the five pillars that will guide the reflection of the numerous national and international leaders invited to attend.
Organized by Nova School of Business & Economics, and NOVA Medical School, the Estoril Conferences count this year, for the first time, with the partnership of Digital Data Design Institute de Harvard (D^3), a prestigious Harvard Institute dedicated to the study of the impact of new technologies on the world, which joins the event’s co-organization with the Municipality of Cascais and Turismo de Portugal.

2024 is a year of profound transformation – since World War II, there have been no such armed conflicts or devastating wars (United Nations, 2023). This year will see more elections and consequent geopolitical changes (The Economist, 2023), and the demographic transition intersects all changes and transitions because, from this year onwards, the population over 65 begins to outnumber the population under 18 (WHO, 2023). Technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) continue to develop exponentially, while environmental degradation reaches alarming levels, with six of the nine planetary boundaries already exceeded (Science, 2023).
In this context, the Estoril Conferences 2024 propose an incisive and comprehensive debate on the most pressing challenges with the greatest impact on the future, knowing that it is imperative to reassess our thinking and actions to drive collective progress.
“In this edition of the Estoril Conferences, we renew our commitment to inspire society to promote a better world. We want to reaffirm our role and contribute once again to action that improves people’s lives in all its aspects”, said Laurinda Alves, Executive Director of the Estoril Conferences.
Presenting itself as a local initiative with global impact, the Estoril Conferences once again convene civil society, politicians, world leaders, and especially the new generations for an inspiring debate that values science, embraces the potential of Technology and AI as allies for progress, respects nature, and privileges solutions based on living systems, while emphasizing holistic approaches to well-being, empowering people to become agents of change and combating polarization, reinforcing the importance of multilateralism.

About Municipality of Cascais
With a privileged location on the Atlantic Coast of Portugal, Cascais has been highlighted as one of the main tourist destinations in Portugal and Europe, for its exclusive location, but also for hosting various international conferences and events. Historically, Cascais was a refuge for European aristocracy and elite where kings’ diplomats, filmmakers, movie stars, writers, entrepreneurs, and bankers, were attracted by the region’s safety (supported by Portugal’s neutrality in conflict situations), but also by the climate, luxury hotels, and the famous Estoril Casino – where Ian Fleming’s was inspired to film the first James Bond novel ‘Casino Royale’. Times have changed, but the charm, glamour, and essence remain. Cascais received the “2014 Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100” award, “Climate Star Award,” and “Vistas – VISION Innovation for Sustainable Tourism Awards,” thanks to various decarbonization and environmental sustainability policies and initiatives in the municipality.

This initiative contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals
The SDGs represent an unprecedented political and international consensus on what the world’s greatest challenges are and the level of progress and collaboration desired on a global scale, as explicit in SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals. The Estoril Conferences offer invaluable insights into this urgent coalition, as it not only brings together academics and professionals, experts in a variety of fields related to the SDGs – such as climate action, purposeful economics, artificial intelligence, corruption, racism, and social inequalities.
