Francis Fukuyama: “It is not just a war between Russia and Ukraine. There is a larger set of ideas”

Economist, Philosopher and Writer, Francis Fukuyama is considered one of world’s most influential thinkers in political science. After participating in the 2011 and 2015 Edition of the Estoril Conferences, the renowned politic theorist joined the 2022 edition for a discussion focused on classical and contemporary liberalism, deconstructing the premises that highlight the apology of a system and its flaws. Conducted by Vasco Rato, former president of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), the session was called “Liberalism and Its Discontents”, based on Fukuyama’s most recent book.

Interviewed by Ricardo Costa, SIC TV Editor-in-Chief, also a speaker at Estoril Conferences 2022, Fukuyama discussed the current unstable geopolitical landscape, namely the Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling our attention for the “global populist movement”, united not by “ideology” but by strength, and the role of liberalism to deal with our increasingly fractured society and to build a more peaceful future.
