Carcavelos, 20th May 2024 – Leading up to the Estoril Conferences, scheduled for October 24 and 25 at Nova SBE’s Carcavelos Campus, two debates will stimulate reflection on crucial future issues: the European Elections and Health Services in Portugal.
The first debate, on May 23 at Nova SBE’s Carcavelos Campus, will feature prominent national leaders discussing the power of the vote and its impact on political decisions shaping the European Union’s future. Under the theme ‘EUROPEAN ELECTIONS. USE YOUR VOTE,’ the debate aims to empower young people to understand the importance of voting as a tool for transforming political reality, encouraging active citizenship and democratic debate.
Participants include Paulo Portas (commentator, political analyst, and professor at Nova SBE), Susana Peralta (professor at Nova SBE specializing in Public Economics and Policy), Vânia Neto, and Ana Catarina Mendes (representatives of Aliança Democrática and Partido Socialista, respectively), and European election candidates João Cotrim de Figueiredo (Iniciativa Liberal), Francisco Paupério (Livre), Alexandre Abreu (Bloco de Esquerda), and António Tânger (Chega).
The second debate, on May 29 at the future campus of NOVA Medical School in Carcavelos, will analyze the transformation and evolution of Portuguese health services over the past 50 years and future challenges. The theme ‘Health Services | 50 Years, the Past and the Future’ will feature specialists discussing progress since the National Health Service (NHS) was created in 1979 and strategies for efficiency and sustainability to ensure universal and equitable access to healthcare.
Participants include Helena Canhão (Dean of NOVA Medical School and President of the Council of Portuguese Medical Schools), Carlos Cortes (President of the Portuguese Medical Association), Maria Antónia Almeida Santos (President of the Faculty’s Council of NOVA Medical School and former President of the Parliamentary Health Committee), Luís Campos Pinheiro (professor at NOVA Medical School and Head of the Urology Department at Hospital de São José), and Marta Passadouro (EITHealth InnoStars Ecosystem Lead Portugal). The debate will be moderated by Laurinda Alves, Executive Director of the Estoril Conferences.

Throughout 2024, continuing the call-to-action from the 2022 edition, the Estoril Conferences will promote actions to encourage society’s participation in building a sustainable future based on equality, equity, justice, and peace.
The 2024 Edition of the Estoril Conferences
Organized by Nova SBE and NOVA Medical School, this year’s Estoril Conferences will partner with Harvard’s Digital Data Design Institute (D^3), dedicated to studying the impact of new technologies. Co-organizers include the Cascais City Council and Turismo de Portugal.
Under the theme ‘Time to ReThink,’ the Estoril Conferences will return to Nova SBE’s Carcavelos campus on October 24 and 25, 2024, proposing dialogue and collective action to overcome global challenges. The five pillars guiding the conference are Peace, Policies, Planet, Artificial Intelligence & Technology, and Longevity.
The Estoril Conferences call upon civil society, politicians, world leaders, and younger generations for an inspiring debate that values science, technology, and AI, respects nature, and prioritizes solutions based on living systems. It emphasizes holistic approaches to well-being, empowering people to combat polarization and reinforce the importance of multilateralism.
