In its first edition, in 2009, the Estoril Conferences were attended by dozens of speakers from a wide range of public and private spheres. Among some of the invited speakers were Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Joseph Stiglitz, Mary Robinson, Radha Kumar and Tony Blair. We were pioneers in putting Portugal on the map of the great world conferences. We also pioneered in promoting large and difficult debates against the background of pluralism and diversity of opinions.
Our stage welcomed names like Frederik de Klerk and Viktor Orbán, Hans Rosling, H.R.H. Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, Mohamed ElBaradei, Shirin Ebadi and Vandana Shiva. We have hosted hundreds of internationally renowned speakers, Nobel laureates, heads and ex-heads of state, politicians, journalists, activists and many youngsters. In every edition, the quality of the content produced by our speakers, audience and organization has grown. And in 2017 we reached a new level.
For the first time, the Estoril Conferences focussed on a single theme: migration. About 4000 people – one third made of by the youth of today – came to Cascais to discuss one of the greatest challenges of the XXI Century. Also for the first time, we had the honor of welcoming the President of the Republic of Portugal in our stage and the privilege of hearing a letter from His Holiness Pope Francisco addressed to the Estoril Conferences. Our promotional video was awarded by the High Commissioner for Migrations.
Now, ten years after its first edition, we are preparing yet another cycle of the Estoril Conferences, which will take place between May 27-29, 2019. The official presentation session of its 6th edition will take place on November 12 at the Centro Cultural de Cascais.
The meeting, scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., will be attended by Ahmad Nawaz, a young activist for peace and education, the Dean of the Nova School of Business and Economics, Daniel Traça, and the Chairperson of the Estoril Conferences, Teresa Violante.
