Born in Mozambique in 1955, Mia Couto is the most awarded Mozambican writer, having received numerous literary prizes, both in his country and abroad. A student of Medicine, he abandoned his studies to join Mozambique’s fight against colonialism. After the independence of his country in 1975, Mia Couto worked as journalist in the capital, Maputo, for more than ten years. Mia Couto has a degree in Biology, and is currently engaged in environmental research in his country. He has published twenty-eight books, which have been translated and released in twenty-seven countries.

In 2011 he was the speaker at the conference in the panel "Global Threats & Security Challenges " (May,4th).
