Prior to joining the firm, João spent six years as political adviser to the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, covering institutional issues of the EU. From 2010 to 2012, João led the unit on foreign policy at the Bureau of European Policy Advisers, the strategic planning office of the President of the EC, working on the transatlantic relationship, on relations with EU's strategic partners, on relations with Turkey, on the Middle East, and on Africa and South America. Before that, João was Director of the National Defence Institute, in Lisbon. He has a PhD degree in International relations and Political Science from the London School of Economics.
