Rosário Farmhouse holds a University Degre in Anthropology (specialising in Social Anthropology), by Universidade Técnica (Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas). Between 1996 and 2008 she has worked in the Jesuit Service to the Refugees of Portugal, having served as a Director for that service between 2003 and 2008.

Her vast experience in this field has led her to write and publish the book, “Começar de Novo – passo a passo com refugiados e deslocados” (Starting over – step-by-step with the refugees and displaced), in 2002.

Her work has been publicly recognised by means of various awards. She has been awarded the honour of Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique by the Portuguese President of the Republic; was named by Visão magazine as one of the personalities of year 2005; the Loures City Council awarded her the merit and dedication medal; in 2008 she received the Padre António Vieira award, for the work she has conducted in building an intercultural and inter-religious dialogue and has been decorated with the Ordem da Princesa Olga, by the President of Ukraine.

On February, 8, 2008, she assumed her position as High Commissioner for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue.
