A national of Austria, Peter Schatzer represents the Parliamentary Assembly for the Mediterranean (PAM) as a Permanent Observer to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Vienna, Austria, and also serves as Senior Adviser to PAM’s Secretary General at its headquarters in Malta.

Following his retirement as Chief of Staff at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2012, he continued to work on demography with particular focus on international migration, as well as on international humanitarian law and trafficking in human beings.

For a considerable part of his career at IOM, he oversaw the organization’s operations in the Mediterranean region including the opening of offices in several Northern African countries as well as on Lampedusa Island. Peter Schatzer also helped develop IOM’s cooperation with the United Nations, was involved in humanitarian operations in Jordan, Rwanda, Mozambique and Kosovo and was a personal aide to former Secretary General of the United Nations, and President of Austria, Kurt Waldheim.

Ambassador Schatzer is a member of the International Institute for Humanitarian Law (IIHL – San Remo, Italy) and the International Metropolis Steering Committee. He continues to serve as curator on the board of the German Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility, Future” (Berlin, Germany) and as board member of the US Association for International Migration (US-AIM).
