Pedro Magalhães is a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS) of the University of Lisbon. His research interests include electoral behavior, social and political attitudes, public opinion, survey research, and judicial and constitutional politics.
He has received his PhD at the Ohio State University, USA, in 2003, with a dissertation focus on judicial review and judicial behavior in Spain and Portugal.
Between 1999 and 2009, Pedro Magalhães has worked at CESOP, the Center for Public Opinion Polls and Studies of the Portuguese Catholic University, which he has also directed between 2005 and 2009. Currently he is involved in coordination of SPARC, ICS’s research group on social and political attitudes, and became the head of research projects at the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation.
As the author of various books and articles, Pedro Magalhães draws attention to different aspects of governance and democracy, as well as the economic and political challenges that Portugal and Europe have been facing recently. He is one of the authors of the book “40 Anos de Políticas de Justiça em Portugal” (40 Years of Politics of Justice in Portugal) (2017).
