Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente was born in Torres Vedras on 16 July 1948. After completing high school, he attended the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon where he majored in history before entering the Seminário Maior dos Olivais in 1973.
In 1979 he graduated in Theology from the Catholic University, doctoral student in historical theology in 1992 with a thesis entitled "In the origins of the contemporary apostolate in Portugal. The 'Catholic Society "(1843-1853).
D. Manuel Clemente was appointed auxiliary bishop of Lisbon by John Paul II, on November 6, 1999. Episcopal ordination took place in the church of Santa Maria de Belém (Jerónimos) on January 22, 2000.
It is the Patriarch of Lisbon since July 6, 2013.
