Jordi Pujol served as President of the Catalan Generalitat and party leader of the nationalist coalition Convergència i Unió from 1980 to 2003. As political activist and intellectual, he has written numerous books that focus largely on the Catalan question and Europe. Between 1992 and 1996 he was President of the Assembly of European Regions. Jordi Pujol has been honoured by many institutions, governments and educational bodies. Among several awards and decorations, he has received a Gold Medal from UNESCO, the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, granted by the President of the Portuguese Republic.
