The Municipality of Cascais and the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI) have jointly launched the Estoril Conferences, a series of biannual conferences on the issues and challenges of globalisation, with a particular focus on global and local relationships.
This initiative aims to set Estoril, and Portugal, as a meeting place for some of the most renowned personalities, politicians, academics, managers, entrepreneurs and social activists. Portugal, having always been affected by the confluence of two major maritime spaces, has had, and may thus continue to have, a frontline tradition of bringing together peoples and regions in debates on ideas about modernity, ecumenism and universalism.
The second edition of the Estoril Conferences on Global Challenges, Local Answers will take place between 4 and 6 May at the Estoril Congress Centre. The conference will gather distinguished speakers who will discuss current issues of globalisation throughout the course of four thematic panels: the architecture of global governance; the consequences of the economic and financial crisis; the major challenges to human security; and the impact of globalisation on domestic policies.
Due to the current political context, the Estoril Conferences 2011 will give a particular emphasis on the political and social transformations currently taking place in the Maghreb and the Middle East. Special attention will also be paid to the euro crisis and its impact on European integration.
This edition of the Estoril Conferences will also include parallel events starting on May 3rd with a roundtable with foreign Ambassadors that will focus on the role that Portugal can play in the context of globalisation. On the morning of May 4th, the theme “Ethics and Global Leadership for the XXIst Century” will be discussed in the course of the Estoril Conferences Academy. An art exhibition will be on display for the duration of the Conference.
